Inside ArtScoll

The first virtual interview with a prominant member of the Jewish community.

I spent the summer of 2023 working as a Vritual Produciton Speacialist for Kolrom multi-media in Rahway, NJ. During my time there I shared and advanced my skills in virtual produciton and Unreal Engine as I implenented a virtual production pipeline into their small studio.

Kolrom primarily produces content for the Jewish community, and part of that content consists os interviews on a greenscreen which is live keyed and recorded using the Blackmagic Ultimatte and ATEM recorders. The backgrounds they used prior to the VP pipeline were statick images either rendered from a 3D software like Maya, or an image created in Adobe Photoshop.

To achieve simulcam in the pipeline, a live feed from Unreal would be sent to the Ultimattes to provide the them wiht an a virtual back ground. We used the HTC Vive Mars camera tracking system to sync the physical cameras to the virtual ones.

The next stage that Kolrom was most interested in was motion capture and animation. They did have an Opti-track system from a previous produciton 10 years prior, but it quickly became apparent that it would be more cost effective to invest in a Rokoko system instead. So we got the entire performance kit with suit, gloves and face capture license. We rigged up a tactical helmet with an extended arm for a phone to capture facial performance.

After, much testing and trials, we finally got the entire pipeline online. This interview with the animated character, Dovid, was the maiden voyage.
